Chapter Seven

Nerves fluttered while anticipation and anxiety played havoc with Kate’s insides. She sat in her Bath chair in front of a cheval mirror to better scrutinize her reflection. Did a woman’s physical appearance matter when most people would only see the chair? Worry twisted her stomach. What did he see when he looked at her?

Her courage fled, and she frowned at her reflection. “I don’t think I can do this. I’m not the sort who attends balls and enjoys them. At least, not now.”

“Pish posh.” Cora rolled her eyes. “Such gammon that, Kate. You are gorgeous. No sense in wasting a gown. You’ve already donned it.”

“Under duress,” she groused.

“You can’t sit in your bedroom and mope.”

“I don’t mope.”

“Then what do you call your sudden moodiness?”

“Wedding nerves?” She glanced into the mirror once more. “It is a pretty gown.” Dark turquoise taffeta with a lighter aqua overskirt that sparkled with each movement thanks to tiny clear glass beads. Sweet little bows dotted the skirt like butterflies along with the hems of the short sleeves. “I adore this color.”

“And it is good for your complexion.” Cora shot her a look of triumph. “No chance of you hiding away in that gown.” Her sister touched a finger to Kate’s elaborately dressed hair. “Miss Epperson did a wonderful job on your coif.”

“She did.” Who would have thought her companion had an aptitude for dressing hair? Kate touched a hand to the pretty white ribbon about her neck. A diamond brooch rested at the hollow of her throat. Matching diamond earbobs glittered on her lobes. It had been a long time indeed since she’d gone out in society. “I don’t think I can attend. This is your celebration. You should be with Bentley and shine instead of worry about me and whether or not I’m blending in.”

No matter how brilliant her gown or how glittering her jewels or how fascinating her conversational skills, guests would avoid her due to her chair. It happened all the time. The chair meant flaws, and flaws were perceived as not of good stock, and that made her damaged and something to avoid.

“I intend to enjoy myself, and you will be there to witness it.” Cora cocked an eyebrow. “If you’d let yourself, I’m sure you’d have a good time too.”

“You know as well as I what will happen.” Kate shook her head. “Having me and my chair there will detract from your celebration.” She touched one of the ringlets framing her face. Would Peter attend tonight? If he did, would he seek her out? She’d not forgotten about the kiss in Hyde Park two days ago or how it had made her feel as if everything was suddenly possible.

What had occupied his time yesterday? Did he think about that kiss as well?

Stop being such a widgeon, Katherine. The man is obviously not for you. He was a rogue, as evidenced by that kiss and the fact he hadn’t bothered to call on her afterward.

Yet the shadows always in his eyes couldn’t be denied.
